Microsoft has just a few moments ago announced the public release of the BizTalk Server 2010 Beta during the keynote at the Application Infrastructure Virtual Launch Event.

Microsoft have also announce as part of the event that the first release candidate of Windows Server App Fabric is now available.

Microsoft have been working on this release for a while and have in the past few months engaged with customers on the Technology Adopters Program (TAP) and with community influencers like MVPs to get the BizTalk Server 2010 Beta release out. The beta product version is 3.9.187.0. BizTalk Server 2010 supports the latest platform releases from Microsoft which have also just recently been released. This comes in a much shorter timeframe than past versions had with regards to platform alignment.

This table has a summary of the updated platform support, which of course are subject to some small changes until the RTM release, and might not all be present on this first Beta release:

.NET Framework version 4 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP2

Take advantage of the new features in the .NET Framework from both BizTalk projects and components called from the BizTalk runtime like pipeline components and.NET class libraries

Visual Studio 2010

Develop BizTalk solutions on the latest and most recently released version of Visual Studio and benefit from its new features

Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Vista SP2

While many of us already had BizTalk Server 2009 running on Windows Server 2008 R2, it was officially unsupported. BizTalk Server 2010 is now fully supported under Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows 7 now also provides a great development environment and is fully supported. It is the operating system I have been running the Beta release for a while now without any issues

SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 SP1

You can now take advantage of the latest release of Microsoft’s database product, SQL Server 2008 R2. Backup compression and transparent data encryption is also now reported to be supported for BizTalk Server databases. Note that for BAM notifications you still need the SQL Server 2005 Notification Services

Microsoft Excel 2010, Microsoft Excel 2007

Create your BAM activities, views and live workbooks with the latest installment of Excel, or use PowerPivot to analyze your BAM activities and views

SharePoint Foundation 2010, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2

The WSS adapter now supports SharePoint Foundation 2010 web applications and web sites. The Microsoft BizTalk Adapter Pack 2010 can also be called from Business Connectivity Services in SharePoint 2010

Upgrade path from BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and BizTalk Server 2009

See the “Upgrading to BizTalk Server 2010 from BizTalk Server 2009 or 2006 R2.docx” document

WCF LOB Adapter SDK 2010 Beta

The latest release of the WCF LOB Adapter SDK has been updated to work on the .NET Framework 4, Visual Studio 2010, and BizTalk Server 2010

Microsoft BizTalk Adapter Pack 2010 Beta

The latest release of the BizTalk Adapter Pack (BAP) includes the Oracle Database, Oracle E-Business Suite, mySAP Business Suite, Siebel, and SQL Server adapters. It has been updated to run on the .NET Framework 4, Visual Studio 2010, and BizTalk Server 2010. These adapters can also be called from Business Connectivity Services in SharePoint 2010, Windows Workflow Foundation or other .Net solutions

Microsoft BizTalk Adapters for Enterprise Applications 2010 Beta

These adapters (JDE, PeopleSoft, TIBCO) have been updated to support the same operating systems as BizTalk Server 2010

BizTalk 2010 Beta Accelerators

The HL7, RosettaNet and SWIFT adapters have been updated to work with BizTalk Server 2010

Host Integration Server 2010 Beta

Several enhancements have been made to the BizTalk adapters, data, message and application integration components, besides now supporting Visual Studio 2010 for Host Integration Server projects

ESB Toolkit 2.1 Beta

The ESB Toolkit has been updated to support BizTalk Server 2010 and Visual Studio 2010

The updated platform support is enough reason for companies to choose BizTalk Server 2010 over previous releases. Microsoft have also included several BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and BizTalk Server 2009 hotfixes in BizTalk Server 2010, and since this is a full and not an R2 release it will have get over a year’s worth of extra support time when compared to BizTalk Server 2009.

But this release is not only made up of the updated platform support. There are many new and updated features and I would like to go over each of them on separate blog posts. Here is a list of new features with links to my blog posts on them (will update when posted):

Enhanced Mapper

Who has been asking what happened to Eddie Churchill’s ‘BizTalk’s sexy new XLST mapper’? Well, the product team have finally created an updated and time saving mapper

BizTalk Server Settings Dashboard and Latency control per host

The BizTalk Administration Console is much more responsive in this release. Microsoft have created a settings dashboard where all the tuning and throttling settings for the BizTalk group, hosts, and host instances are available in one window. And the orchestration and messaging polling intervals are now a per host setting instead of applying to the whole group

Enhanced FTP adapter with FTPS support

Several features have been added to the FTP adapter, including FTPS support

BizTalk + AppFabric

Microsoft have added mapper and Microsoft BizTalk Adapter Pack 2010 support to Windows Workflow

Enhanced trading partner management

Microsoft have rebuilt the trading partner management object model and have introduced new features like support for several business divisions under the same partner

New System Center Operations Manager management pack

A brand new management pack has been created. It has performance improvements and also offers separates views: one for the overall health of the services and servers that compose the BizTalk server group; and one for the health of deployed applications

There are a few other updates that I won’t go into detail like support for HIPPA version 5110 and new out of the box RFID components for event filtering and event delivery.
